I believe your willingness to utilize social media as a learning tool is beneficial to the students, because in this technology era, global education systems are getting away from only using books to educate their students, so I think this method is allowing us to compete globally by widening our learning methods.

I think it's a good idea. It gets people involved in things they wouldn't normally get involved in and it gets people researching things outside of the classroom.

Valerie Henderson, 11/20/2013

I feel it's a new and inviting way to get students involved with everyday situations that they would have no idea about. Also, everyone can express how he or she feels and show a video or a link to an article or news clip of what they believe is interesting.

I think social networks in general are helpful to teach in the class. I really like your method to teach. I like when you post some interesting video or article in your Twitter or in your blog. I think information like those, are always important, because they are extra information that sometimes the professor did not have time to talk about in class, so we can check in the social network.

During the semester I did not participate in the Twitter discussions and research, but I do think that using Twitter was beneficial to our class. I enjoyed learning about the research other students had done, and learning how current events could be related to sociology. I feel that for me learning about these connections it made it easier for me to understand the concepts of sociology. I also found it to be more enjoyable when we could see the more current sociological research on topics. For example I enjoyed watching the video about Philip Zimbardo's experiment because I learned how easy it is for people to conform to specific roles even in today's society. I also enjoyed watching videos of other people who had different perspective on issues then I do, because by learning about their point of view I was able to broaden the way I think about certain things. For example the video we watched on education made me think that using Twitter in the classroom was beneficial because it allowed me to expand on my knowledge of sociology from beyond the textbook to everyday life.

Even though I did not participate in using Twitter this semester I believe this approach was very beneficial in the sociology 101 classroom. For my two years I have been in college I have never had an instructor to use social media as part of the classroom curriculum. I feel that some instructors are hesitant to incorporate this new social media into certain aspects of their class. Using Twitter as a tool in the class had many benefits. The first benefit was that it gave students an opportunity to expand on what they were learning in class. Even though I did not directly post things on Twitter, when we went over the articles in class I would write down the names of the articles and go read over some of them in my spare time. By doing this I was able to better understand the things we were learning in class by looking at some more specific examples and other people's opinions on the subject. A second benefit to using Twitter is that we were able to watch YouTube videos that students posted to Twitter in class to go along with what we were going over in class that day. Many of the YouTube videos we watched really made me think and they also helped to clear up what the book was saying sometimes. Two specific videos we watched that really stood out to me were the videos about what life was like in America for a young boy who was a Shik and the Ted Talks video on education in American. We watched the video about Shikism when we discussed religion in class. These two different videos gave us different perspectives about the world to consider when we were learning this new material about religion and education in America. In Sociology 101 we also covered a chapter on the mass media. In this chapter we learned about the different aspects of the media. By using Twitter students were able to interact with what they were learning not just be confined to learning the material in lecture. Using Twitter as a tool in the classroom was a very beneficial tool that helped me to expand my knowledge of sociology.

I personally liked the twitter connection because I'm on twitter more than I'm watching the news, so I found out a lot of information through twitter versus the actual television. I don't always have time to stop and sit down to watch television or to stay up late at night, but twitter is an app on my phone and I can always check it in my spare time.

I believe that the multi-media approach of using twitter as a learning tool is beneficial for everyone. It gives the students a chance to learn using technology, which is something that needs to be learned to use well and it keeps the students well informed about what is going on in the world.

I loved your video presentations in class! It made stories like Genie's come to life in a way that wouldn't have been possible just using a textbook. It improved my knowledge of the subject material and made class time more fun and interesting. I like the Twitter thing and should have participated in it more. I was not familiar with it coming into this semester and I struggled with it some because I'm not as technologically savvy as I should be. Overall your class was one of the best that I've had because you taught it in an unbiased and informative way. The extra content made me think about the people involved rather than just seeing words on a page.

Sunny Schwab, 11/22/2013

Personally, I have a twitter but after using it for a couple of months, decided it wasn't for me. It's not that I dislike the idea of using multi-media to share with people across the world, it is just hard for me to get into the "twitter" scene. I think it is a wonderful idea and learning tool for the class, and I think all the TED videos we've watched have been informational and interesting. I completely agree with using more social media between students and teachers. I wish I could have used twitter more and gotten into the social media world with this class. For future classes, though, I think more and more people will become attuned to using social media such as twitter to help their learning.

Emily Miles, 11/25/2013

I think that the multi-media approach was great for some, and not for others. As for me, it wasn't helpful. I made a twitter for this class but didn't use it once. I don't use any social media websites past my mobile Facebook application. I rarely post things on that even. When I am on the computer at my home I am working on homework. If I have social media screens up, I can assure you no homework will be completed. Distractions such as these are detrimental to an ADHD person's mind! For others, I can definitely see how it would be helpful. Relating to the nature of teen and young adult culture today is a great tool to use in the classroom. I just am a tiny bit different than the social media junkies today are. It will be different for everyone, which is why I think that the extra credit part is the best idea for it. If it counted against me for not using it, I'm sure I would have struggled a little too much for comfort. Knowing that it wouldn't hurt me if I didn't do it, helped me not stress out.

Although I do not use twitter in sociology, I think it is a great concept. I do not spend much time on the internet unless I am doing school work so I do not have much time to have a twitter account. I do regret not partaking in this approach though because I could have used the extra credit and learned a lot while in the process.

I feel as though it is good to incorporate it into the classroom. Not only do you sit in class and learn sociology but you can also research and see it all over social media. I feel like in a way it just proves what we learn in class and I think it is good to see how sociology is actually implemented in our day-to-day society, and we can see that through Twitter.

Shaquanta' Spencer, 11/25/2013

I think using twitter is a perfect way of learning sociology. The content of twitter is profoundly based on social networking. It's a new way to learn about the world and keep up to date with current news. It encourages the students to go beyond just the ordinary text book reading and expand their way of learning. All new ideas or any different aspect of learning should be used according to which technique works for the person.

Lewis Burns, 11/25/2013

I feel like using twitter for this class is a great idea. It gives us news and tells us things that are going on in the world. I think it would be a great idea to continue using this for the class. Twitter gives you a chance to interact with you as well. I wish more professors at Upstate would use this method and I feel like every professor should consider this.

Kendal Bryan, 11/26/2013

I did not participate in the Twitter (only because I do not even have a personal one), but I did enjoy the feeds you shared in class. They were relative and it seemed like you had a lots of students participating! I think it is a good tool that you should continue. I think more students will get more interactive throughout the semesters with more technologically advanced students.

Emily Nicholas, 11/23/2013

Although earlier in my homework I discussed how I thought technology could be a growing sociological issue in the United States, I do believe that the use of Twitter in this class was a beneficial one. Although I did not participate much in giving posts, I thought that the concept as a whole was pretty cool. The fact that people from all over the world can read what's going on and what our student's find is fascinating. It was nothing I've experienced in any other class, so at first I was skeptical on how it would work. It is safe to say that I was proven wrong though, because using Twitter was a great way to interact with students, yet still keeping in touch with sociological news going on in the world - since it is changing every day.

Gabrielle Butler, 11/24/2013

I like this approach being incorporated as a learning tool in this class because the world is continuing to grow on media and social networking sites lead in this new era of communication. Seeing as most young people and adults have a twitter and engage in most popular networking sites at Twitter, it makes learning a more fun and interesting way to engage and be involved in the learning.

Avery Frost, 11/26/2013

I believe the use of twitter to show real world sociological problems helps us as students to get a better understanding of what sociological problems and perspectives exist by witnessing current and real situations. Communication is a brother to learning and the technology keeps us updated on how the information learned in class pertains to us and our world. With twitter and social media being a growing part of our culture, I believe it is very effective in and of itself as showing cultural and social connections.

Jennifer Weatherman, 11/24/2013

I like the fact that you used multimedia means to connect with your students. This challenged them to find things that related to topics discussed and it made the topic more interesting to learn. You were able to interact with your students on a whole another level. I think this was a very good idea!

Hannah Hyder, 11/26/2013

I think that this is a cool idea if you could get everyone on board to do it. I know that it didn't benefit me much because I never participated in it and also everyone may not have availability to twitter or they might not have a desire to make a twitter. But this could potentially be a good idea.

Adam Bailey, 11/25/2013

I found that incorporating media in the class helped me to better understand and relate to the subject material. Twitter especially was fun although I was hesitant at first not really knowing how twitter worked; I go the hang of it relatively quick and used it throughout the semester. It helped me to better connect to the world and society, as well as opened my eyes to the science of sociology which encompasses so much.

Chandler Clarke, 11/24/2013

It is no secret that technology is taking over the world today. It is everywhere in your home, stores, restaurants, and even now in schools. My senior year of high school all the teachers were given smart boards as a better and more visual way to teach and now they are giving students iPads for e-books and more visual learning. Sociology 101 was the first class I have had in college that was pro-technology. Most teachers are so anti-technology and would never even suppose for you to twee ideas you have and things you find that relate to class to them. I believe this idea to be very helpful and very successful and if many more teachers should really start using this you would be surprised how well it works. This urges you when you're bored surfing the internet, twitter, Facebook the list goes on and on to really see the sociology that is all in the world around us. This makes test day easier because you are seeing real life examples and are really getting a full understanding of sociology. The examples you show make the lessons we learn much easier to grasp because we are seeing a real life example of this. So I believe this to be very successful and more teachers should jump on board for this. It not only makes you get a better understanding for certain things in sociology it makes your really see them and makes you fully understand why these things happen by seeing real life examples. So I feel this is a very successful tool and makes learning these sometimes boring things much easier and more interesting.

As a tool, I believe the Twitter Socio 101 gives the ability to contribute in a way that positively influences how content is discussed in class. It not only allows us as students to learn from the professor, but also for the professor to share what other students think as well, and collaborate or provide constructive criticism. I enjoyed some of the comments that were brought up from some of the topics discussed and how the student contributions were given attention. Student contributions could have been higher, but overall I think there were some interesting points made that helped to reinforce some key topics.

The interactive concept of Sociology 101 has helped maintain my interest and desire to learn. I find it extremely fascinating that I can use the concepts learned I have learned in class in the modern day world. I can literally see scenarios in the world unfold and analyze them in real time. The interaction that Twitter has provided has been priceless in learning and actually understanding the principles of sociology.

Emily Caudill, 11/26/2013

I feel that using Twitter as a learning tool is a very good way to get students involved in your class. By using something they are already interested in they are more likely to get involved. The students are also already knowledgeable on how to use Twitter so sending a tweet about sociology is easy. By sending these tweets all of their followers which are other college students will see this and will also be more likely to learn about sociology. I think it is a genius way to keep updated with your students. It is also a fun and different way than a typical extra credit assignment would be.

Shagun Mistry, 11/25/2013

I think that it is an amazing idea because not only does it make the students think about sociology after class but also, it makes other people on the web find out how sociology matters and how it affects us today. The posts will soon start to get attention from people all over the world and this will create another way for people to help people in other countries. Also, most of the teenagers use social media to communicate with other teenagers, so if social media is used to share education-related news then they will be more likely to understand and learn it than they would have in a class. This approach should be used in other schools too so more teenagers will become knowledgeable of what is going on in the world. It shouldn't just be used for Sociology but also for other subjects such as politics, philosophy, psychology, etc. This would really help college students become educated voters too, especially if they started sharing political news. Students can also help out people worldwide by using twitter as a medium to start charities, funds, and campaigns.

I think that using social media is a great way to get a class active in a classroom. I am an SI leader and I try to do some of the same things with my group by having them look things up and getting updates on their phones. I think that technology is almost a way of life now and that sooner or later we are all going to be consumed by it. We need to learn how to interact with our teachers and classmates better through technology. By reading their posts and seeing others perspectives on things, I think that it broadens our thinking and helps us see things in a new light. Using twitter also forces the students to learn and understand what is going on in the world today.

I feel as though this is a great way to get the class involved and attentive. I think this has a lot to do with why we're so engaged in conversations and discussions in class. It's quite interesting and definitely helpful when you pull up videos as we're going over the topics.

Using Twitter is such a creative way to involve students in learning about sociology beyond the class. I have personally never used Twitter before this class. I was able to easily send interesting page links that could be shared. I think this enables students to easily get involved in sociology around the world and within America. It can get students really interested in what is going on in real life rather than in the book. Students must also have an idea of what is going on in our textbook to be able to find related material, which will broaden their knowledge on the topic. Twitter is just the modern version of finding a newspaper clipping that relates to a topic you are studying in class, yet it offers so much more information that can be shared amongst a larger group of people. I think it is a fantastic idea to have Twitter as a way students can learn more about sociology in/beyond the classroom.

I feel that the use of worldwide media within a sociology classroom is an appropriate and interesting tactic. The use of short, concise messages to establish student - professor contact is definitely useful, and the ability to simply send links to videos, articles and news stories is really convenient and effective. I really like the fact that, if I wished, I could record my own reactions to your teachings and send a link, or simply find other articles which support my point of view, or which provide more information on something taught in class…. This adds a level of convenience, yet still allows for an approachable setting for sharing information.

I feel that using Twitter as a way to expand the learning approach in Sociology is a wonderful idea. Like I stated in question one, social networks should be used in a positive way and this is a perfect example. Because students are so involved with social networks, using twitter as a way to gain extra credit points seems interesting to us and motivates us to participate. It is also a way for other people to get involved and see what is shared because twitter is public. I think other teachers should start taking this approach; it really is a great way to get students involved more.

Emily Gray, 11/26/2013

I feel like using Twitter as a learning tool is an excellent idea. Today, the younger generation spends the majority of their time on social networking. Incorporating learning into that is a good approach. Students can get so overwhelmed with school today and most take breaks and go to their social networking sites. If there was a way for all subjects to use Twitter and post interesting things where students could see them that helps them learn, I think students would be more open to learning.

Denisha Ward, 11/26/2013

I think it is very important, because it helps the students stay updated on how everyone in the world communicates. It also informs you about what's going on in the world today. Another thing is if someone in the class has a question about something you can answer it using Twitter, and maybe that can help someone else in the process. Twitter Socio 101 lets you discuss things with other people who may agree or disagree with you. It's a great way for people in and outside of the class to kind form their own community online, and you get to meet new people.

I think that using the multi-media approach is a good way for students to become active and aware of real world content that is relatable to what is being taught during the lecture. It is a great way to bring all of the classes and students together and talk about common interests. I haven't gotten a chance to fully interact with the Socio 101 Twitter, but I have seen tweets and I was able to make the connection between real things that are actually happening, and the terms used in the book and learned in class. Unfortunately, my semester was super hectic so I was never able to exercise the option of doing extra credit. Overall, I think using the multi-media approach is a great learning tool for the course all together.

I think that Professor Scherich's approach using twitter in class to stay connected with his students is very good. Not many of the older generation are accepting the technology changes. The fact that this professor is deciding to incorporate twitter for us to stay connected with class even when we are not in class just shows that he cares and is accepting the change. I think more professors should do this because that is what most kids are doing nowadays. Social sites are our daily lives now if we want to admit or not. Having a professor being connected with twitter is more convenient. I may not tweet all the time but I do browse through twitter throughout the day just to stay connected.

Personally I enjoyed using Twitter Socio 101 during this course. It allowed the class to interact with the teacher through discussions and videos in and out of the classroom, which made some of the material easier to understand. I personally didn't post or add any discussions, articles, or videos for the class, but it was nice to see and talk about these things during the class. It's also a good way to make sure the teachers and students are on the same page so that the students understand the material and receive good grades and the teachers deliver the material well and in return give good grades to the students. Overall, it's a good learning tool that helps both sides of the classroom.

I think that using Twitter in and beyond the classroom is awesome! It gives you a way to connect with other people from around our country. You hear things in the news and are able to share it with us in class. It is a great tool and I wish more professors would (at least) give Twitter a try.

Kylin Hunter, 11/18/2013

I like the general idea of searching through the media to find documents on sociological matters in the world. However, it is a challenge with it being on Twitter. With all of the other more important school matters that I have to deal with, I do not take it upon myself to use twitter very often (or any social media, for that matter) because I just do not have the time to do it. It would also help if the assignment was more of a requirement that an optional piece. If this were the case, I would force myself to set aside some time to complete the assignment. Also, I think it would be a lot more beneficial if we could bring the current events to the class instead of posting them. That way, we could spend the first couple of minutes of class talking about sociology in current events, and the class will have a better perspective on how sociology affects us in the world today.

Brianna Riley, 11/21/2013

I really have enjoyed this approach! It has gotten more individuals intrigued then I then I have imagined. Being able to participate in sending stories twice a week or reading different posts has gotten me more interested in what really goes on in the world we live in today. Prior to having this class I wasn't big on keeping up with the news or what happens in various countries or in our country, but Twitter has changed that. I feel as though it's a great opportunity.

I think that it's great that you are using twitter outside of the classroom as a learning tool. Sometimes that is better for students when teachers see that they can take something that the kids in their class enjoy and let them partake in studies that way. Maybe it can get them to even be involved more and they can learn in a new way. Combining work and something someone is actually familiar with almost always works. I feel like more teachers should try different approaches such as twitter outside of the classroom. The least they could do is experiment with it to see how the students react! Something new is always worth a shot.

I do feel that incorporating Twitter into the classroom was a great way to help us understand sociology better. Since our whole generation is the technological generation, incorporating Twitter helps us feel connected to you as a teacher. My English teacher also used this tool in his classroom. I feel like I will be reading tweets posted later on when this semester is over. Although I didn't tweet as much as some, I read what others are posting.

I like the fact that Twitter was incorporated into our classroom. It gave students an opportunity to actually find out what was going on in the real world outside of college. Students were able to learn so much just by what was being posted to better help their understanding of material. Through the Twitter posts students can see what his or her classmates are thinking about. It is cool to see all these examples of how sociology is involved in everyday society. With encouraging students to participate in this opportunity, they will soon realize how easy it is to find sociology in everything. I personally have found myself guilty of finding articles to post without even trying too. Just hearing something, I have thought of how to incorporate with the chapters we are covering. This approach has made it possible for me to apply sociology to my everyday life and see how relevant it is in everything. The first reaction of my friends when I mentioned this extra credit opportunity, was surprise and they didn't really know what to think about it. After seeing all of my posts and examples I have showed them, they completely changed their point of view on the matter. Everybody that has personally experienced this approach agrees with the goals wanted from this assignment. It has helped me and made me more aware of what was happening around me, also it helps a lot to be able to apply the chapter lessons into something relative to me personally.

This tool of using Twitter has been incorporated into learning by giving students a chance to think independently and be able to search for relevant issues following the curriculum given in class. I think that if I was a big fan of using social media that I would be more interested and involved in this learning tool. It is a great way to provide extra information about topics learned in class that we may not have time in class to discuss. This is a way to reach students and stay up on current events. Also, the textbook is not always the current edition so this is a way to show current examples of what is learned in the text book. As I said I am not a fan of social media because I think social media is nothing but drama and a way to destroy relationships because you do not have the face to face communication which we are losing due to increases in technology. If I did like it more and did not find it confusing to use, I would use it more and post more things on twitter.

Teachers and Professors can connect to their students on a wider level as well as on a personal level. Interactions can be taken beyond the classroom as Twitter is omnipresent in our smartphones and laptops. Twitter gives new opportunities to connect to other learning communities and new educational content. The very nature of Twitter is to be brief and to-the-point which makes for rapid broadcast of learning. I think by this approach being incorporated it opens up new ways of communicating and interacting with classmates and professors on an education level.

As a non-traditional student, I feel as though the multi-media approach using Twitter Socio 101 has been extremely helpful throughout this class. As an older student, I read the news on a daily basis. By having this learning tool for this class, it encouraged me to look deeper into the articles that I read. It also allowed me to find interesting articles based on the subjects that we were discussing in class which I might not ordinarily read. This multi-media approach allows you to use the information that is being learned in class, and implement it into the world that you are living in.

I think it is a great way and learning tool for students and for them to interact with the teacher. I am not a big fan of twitter, mostly I do Facebook. But it is a great way to provide extra information about topics learned in class and those around the world not discussed in class. It can teach students and keep them involved with current events. I never got twitter and was confused on how to do it, and I am just not bery interested in it like I am Facebook. If I knew how to use it, I would post more things on twitter.

I think that this tool works best with the age range of students in college since we are all very involved with social media.

I think the incorporation of twitter as a learning tool is a very smart way to get students engaged in learning. This is a good approach because the use of social media is very powerful when trying to get the attention of others. Students spend countless hours on social media websites every day, so what better way to get feedback and responses about in class topics then through a multi-media approach using twitter. In addition, twitter allows for the uploading of videos and photo content which is even better for sharing class contents.

I think if I could use twitter and were more knowledgeable about twitter, that maybe it could have been a very useful tool. I think orientation in the beginning of the semester would help a lot. I love the idea of being able to go back and look at videos pertaining to some of the subjects that we discussed in class. Twitter was working for me in the beginning, but for whatever reason, I was unable to send anymore tweets. I did go through your web page and read very interesting topics and shared some of the videos with my husband. Being able to view the videos helped me on several homework assignments by helping me understand certain topics or definitions better because I am a visual learner. Thanks for everything in your class, I really enjoyed it!

I love the approach Mr. Scherich took using twitter as a multi-media approach. I think it allows students to be even more involved in the class because of the use of a popular social network. I also think it allows the student to understand sociology because they can choose what they post, which is more than likely something that interests them. Thanks Mr. Scherich!

I personally feel that in my daily life, outside of school, I fail at keeping up with current affairs. I know little about events or news taking place in my local community, my nation, and even less the world. In my opinion the use of Twitter in a sociology class should be called applied sociology. It is far more useful than basic book knowledge of sociology. This project had me exploring all kind of local and international news. I feel like I now have a working knowledge of the world around me and how it will possibly affect me in the future.

I am personally more of a hands-on and visual learner as opposed to auditory learner, so being able to watch videos in and outside of class really helps me to further understand what something might mean. The video access also helps me remember a good bit more than if I had just read the information. I think it is a great tool, and in the future will definitely be something of value for teachers as well as students. I think a big problem with today's society is that we're stuck in our own little world and rarely see the actual world outside, and I think using Twitter challenges students to look for things to tweet, for things interesting. I think this will become more popular over the next few years.

I did not take advantage of this and now I am very mad at myself. Through twitter and the Boston Marathon bombing I learned how twitter and other social media can help. It connects everyone and important information for learning and knowledge and keeping up with events can be at your fingertips with social media. I have learned, although late, that this is a good concept.

Personally I#039;ve gotten absolutely nothing out of using Twitter over the course of the semester. I do see how important a tool it is in quickly disseminating information to a vast number of people. I fail to see how it was incorporated as a learning tool this semester. Very little emphasis was placed on information obtained through said media in the classroom setting. Moreover, what was discussed in regard to our Twitter exploits was done so more in passing.

Perhaps a more effective approach would be the requirement of a Twitter account for every member of the class. Postings from all students would still be welcome, with emphasis on subjects that are currently being discussed in class. The professor would then post a couple of tweets, specifically identifying the sociological terminology the attached material is relevant to. The tweets would then be required reading for discussion at the beginning of the next scheduled class.

For me, Twitter was an exercise in futility. I already ingest a large amount of items of sociological import through the internet. If the approach was tweaked a bit, I could see Twitter fulfilling the function of an educational tool.

I think that using a multi-media approach is a really good idea for a classroom setting. It helped me understand some concepts on a deeper level than I would have if there wasn't the multi-media aspect. The videos we watched were the most helpful for me because it gave me a visual to connect back to what we were learning. Also, I loved hearing the real life stories of how what we were reading in the book applies to life situations. I would definitely say I gained a better understanding of sociology due to the multi-media that was incorporated into the classroom.

First of all, I absolutely love the idea of using Twitter Socio101 as an extra credit incentive because it forced me to learn something new and also gave me the chance to earn more credit towards my overall grade. I had no idea that this class could change my life and the way I viewed our society. Twitter Socio101 allowed students to find, learn and exchange information that was relative to chapters we discussed in class. Also, I didn't know how to post articles to websites for referenced reading material. In doing so, I was able to keep up with some current events by participating in the international readership in this class. It is important to learn about local and global news going on while leading a busy life. Anything can happen at any time such as the latest Boston marathon terrorist attack.

Using twitter in the classroom is a great thing. Twitter allows you to share information fast to lots of people. Using it in an academic way allows you to share information that can be useful to many people who are researching, especially those in school. Looking through the information you share on Twitter Socio101, I find many interesting things that come from reliable resources that I can use in research or just read out of interest. Using social media in the classroom should be incorporated in more classes and schools. It's a great classroom tool.

This approach of incorporating Twitter as social media content as a tool in this class is a great way to share information easily among the students. I think it is also a great way for others around the world to connect with the class and to learn about what else is going on around the world without having to travel to that specific place. I also think that using the twitter is a good idea because it is up to date and is one of the most used social media around today.

I feel like using media as a learning tool can be really helpful, whether it's opening student's eyes to social problems or getting them involved in a different learning method. Using multi-media in the classroom can also help grab the student's attention by showing real life examples of the material covered in class. Although there are positives to using media in the classroom, how many of the working students would take the time to use twitter for a measly 5 points extra credit? That just does not seem worth the time and effort.

I feel that the implementation of twitter in the classroom as a learning tool can be a double edged sword. It can be very powerful in the fact that we have quick and almost instantaneous communication with our professor and can access numerous valuable supporting media that is relative to class. However twitter is a hard concept to grasp for one who has not used it before and some people are just not interested for the reason of just not wanting to be constantly bombarded with it and having to keep up with it. I think you should keep doing what you are doing though, those who choose to participate are the ones who probably enjoy it most. Those who don't shouldn't be penalized. You have got the right idea of what to do with twitter, so keep it up.

I feel that using Twitter in the classroom is a great way to help students learn. It gives them a new medium through which to learn the material and see the concepts we learn in class as they have happened in the real world. It also helps that students are now using social media for something other than socialization. However, while I believe that the use of social media in the classroom may be helpful in the short-term, I also believe that, in the long-term, it could harm the educational system by undermining students'#039; need to actually remember what they learn. The Internet gives us quick access to information, to find what we need quickly, but it could also make people impatient and unable to read a book when they need to simply because of the fact that they actually have to read it in order to get the information they need. I believe that classrooms should have a balance of both book sources and technological sources. This way, students can learn things in multiple ways. Some students learn better one way, and others learn better the other way, so it's good to allow students access to both in order to ensure that they have what they need.

Using Twitter Socio 101 as a media content for sharing and learning sociology was a very creative idea. If you use this approach as a learning tool in class I believe you will receive more readership and cooperation. For me personally, when I heard we could use the twitter approach to earn extra credit, I thought to myself what an easy way to boost my grade. I could just Google local and worldwide news to tweet about the information without reading the articles. But after trying to find recent information to tweet about I began to be interested about what I was tweeting. I no longer just tweet the information I began to read but research further into that topic. Using the twitter approach did give me a lot of culture enrichment.

During the beginning of the semester, I hadn't been using the Twitter Socio 101 for extra credit and didn't really fully understand the concepts of the different approaches and roles in each section. But after I started using the Socio 101 Twitter, I was able to make the connection between real things that are actually happening, and the terms used in the book. I like how you made it an extra credit part of class and not mandatory because there are people like me who just can't get down with the new social sites. I believe this is a good approach because the class is sociology and Twitter is a social media content. This is a good way to get students active in the class instead of it just being a "chore". I feel like in a way it helps and in a way it doesn't. The reason why I say this is because when it comes to social media some people are strictly just having fun and sometimes saying things that may be offensive to others. In saying this I feel like some people may not take social media seriously when it comes to school work. You do have some people who may look at this as a learning tool and a gateway to express themselves on social media because it may be hard to do so in class. Overall I think that this is a good and a bad idea.

While many people may want to not believe that our future is through these types of medium, it is inevitable that is where we are headed. I wish more teachers would incorporate using social media sites because it helps teach kids how to use it if they are not familiar with it and gets them researching other things on the internet that can help further their learning in class. I feel like this was an excellent learning tool for this sociology class.  Students are able to go on the twitter feed and look at what is trending, and what issues are currently going on in the world.  Not all news websites and newspapers contain the information that you can find from other people connected to twitter and that is why I feel like this is such a good learning source.  It is easy to share things relating to global issues very easily on twitter.  Twitter also makes finding global and U.S. issues easy.  Discovering is the hardest part and twitter enables sharing all this really cool stuff!  Other professors can get information and share it with their students which I think is awesome.

Using twitter helped in this case, and helped as well in getting me to use twitter as a new form of social media, regarding the gathering of interesting information from other sources

I think that it was a great idea and learning tool to help people see examples of the terms in sociology that are important to grasp and that it's beneficial to others outside of class.  Through twitter you are able to show us not only things that happen around us and in America, but relate it to issues in foreign countries or show us how cultures differed from one country to the next.  I enjoyed it and I think you should continue the approach as it was beneficial to me and the rest of the class.

I personally like the new approach to sociology.  The new approach opened my eyes to the sometimes, harsh realities on earth.  My point of view about society has grown, and I appreciate how fortunate I am.  The twitter experiment helped me read about different issues that interest me.  Overall, I think the new approach will be a blessing to students who can't see the opportunities they have and the social world that we live in.

I think that twitter being incorporated into this course was a great idea.  Students already use twitter everyday so why not invite it into the classroom?  Technology is changing every day, month, semester, and year.  Right now twitter is being used all over the world and we are studying topics that are all over the world in this Sociology class so it does really make sense.  Also it helps to go out and find definitions of the words in the book online in real situations through the articles that we find.  Also the fact that it is extra credit also gives us a incentive to do the work and find good articles.  It is really cool to find out who is viewing our articles across the world.  I like the idea of this multi-media approach.

The multi-media approach using Twitter Socio101 as a social media is a good idea.  I feel that in today's society that world is all about technology and using technology is mostly a big part of everyone's lives.  Incorporating the Twitter approach asa learning tool in this class is a good idea.  Using Twitter helps us see what else is in the world that we don't see and by posting it on twitter it gives people the opportunity to see what you can find or already know on a certain topic.

Integrating social media in class makes it easier for some students to understand the subject matter.  It is a way for us to relate to the topic of discussion.  This makes it seem more relevant to our lives because it shows that is a part of our lives even though we may notice.  When students feel like they contribute to the class they tend to be more engaged in the subject directly or indirectly.

Twitter Socio 101:  I loved the Twitter interaction with @Socio101.  I went into the book and found key words and searched for these issues.  The articles and videos I found helped me understand these concepts because I could relate them to something that was currently happening.  I enjoyed seeing what Professor Scherich found as well as Professor Scherich giving me positive feedback when I shared a good post.  Professor Scherich took something that I use everyday and related with a learning experience.  The Twitter portion of this class was my favorite part of the entire class.  I would like more professors to incorporate the social media into our material because it is a huge part of college students lives.

Good Evening Professor Scherich

Just for the record, it's not really necessary to do this, but because you requested it, I am more than willing to oblige. You my dear friend and brother, are without a doubt one of the most gifted professors I've ever had. After a delay, I attended Benedict College in Columbia, SC my very first year. I had Freshman Comp / Literature under a guy by the name of Professor John Preacher. I thought I knew how to write, read short stories and be able to explicate the thing I just read. I thought that until I met Professor Preacher. I still say to this day more than 30 years later, he was very challenging, well prepared, had a sincere passion for teaching, and really wanted his students to succeed. It was very personal for him. He was one of the best. I'm certain that 30 years from now after being under your tutorledge, I will be able to say the same thing for you. I did not have the awareness I now have about the issues that really concern us as a race of people domestically and internationally. This class is and was the most informative class I've had all year and they all were very informative. I was really blessed to have had some excellent instructors this past semester. Having said that, you still take the cake my friend. I pray that GOD will bless you in every way. Thank you for a job well done.

Have a lovely holiday, Professor

I apologize for not writing you sooner. Exam week at the high school just ended and break is finally here. I wanted to write to you about how wonderful attending your class was this semester. Your class was painless but also interactive enough to keep a high school student intrigued. The Twitter feature you added to your class for extra credit was a wonderful idea. It kept me connected with you if I had any issues, and I could see up to date articles that you frequently published. I hope you keep Twitter as part of your curriculum and refuse to be discouraged by your colleagues who say "you are adding more work for yourself"". I actually found it quite funny that, no disrespect at all intended, an older instructor as yourself would think to include a modern social networking. Sociology 101 was a great course to start off in. Unfortunately, not all the college classes I will be taking will be as enjoyable as yours. Thank you for enlightening us this year and I hope you have a great holiday.

Happy Holidays,

I like the multi-media approach you have incorporated into Sociology 101. I think it is beneficial to learning sociology because it incorporated sociology topics that we are reading and learning about in class with a social media platform that we (students) use on a daily basis. Learning from a book is obviously a great way to learn the material, but the Twitter posts students and you post also help because we see examples of what we are learning about in the book that apply to our daily lives.  Researching topics from class and posting them on Twitter helps our research skills and also helps us gain a deeper understanding of the topics in sociology because we see real life current events that are examples of these topics. I also liked using Twitter for class because it exposed me to information that I did not know about before. I had not used Twitter for educational purposes and had not explored it for a source of real information. I plan on maintaining the account in order to stay up to date with current events and continue to research current events.

I personally thought that it was a great way to get students to interact more in the class. It was not mandatory, which was a smart move, but for those that participated, it was a good way to lead into whatever issue was being covered in the class that day. It also shows that the teacher cares a great deal about his students and wants to interact and engage the student to start looking for things related to the class that happen in everyday life, such as the Trayvon Martin shooting. That brought everyone's attention to how we still, as a country, will profile someone because of their race. We then, as a class can go more in depth about the concept of racial profiling and look at other examples as well.

At first I was afraid of the concept, now I am almost comfortable with this technique. I had not had any Twitter experiences, and truly did not desire to. However, any little bit helps, and I am willing to try new things that seem harmless. So, I created an account and watched for a couple of days and class lectures to see what type of information was being used. Then once I thought I knew what was going on, I jumped in and tried to copy what I was seeing. Only after a few more days, I then realized what to focus in on and make it relevant to the class theme if I could. Some days I would just read interesting post and decide to share them, and other days I could happen upon topics that were discussed or mentioned in class. This technique became much easier to me once I watched the tutorial and played some on my own. However, I am more of the social groupie for Facebook. I am understanding the way that Twitter can be just as effective to the world as we know it.

I think incorporating Twitter into Sociology is an excellent and useful tool for most people inside and outside of the education spectrum. Most younger people, who are already logged into social media, will be able to adjust to it with ease. As for older people with less experience with new technology and social media, they should be able to adjust to it just as easily through instructional video tutorials. Not only does using Twitter expand on aspects of sociology, it goes beyond the classroom with real world events that aren't always seen on the news of in the newspapers. So when the student is no longer in the sociology class, they can still be up to date with what's going on in the world, unfiltered, and be able to associate a sociological perspective with it. Twitter is a safe and secure website with very few bugs so there should be no fear of having any personal information stolen either.

I think the use of multi-media approach in the class is a good thing. It helps the students to know what is going on in the world and gives the students a chance to share what they find and see in the world. It also gives good examples of what is being studied in the class and shows how it applies to what is being taught. It is also a good way to get information instantly and without censorship. The extra credit also helps with low test scores and even helps the student to learn the stuff that they might miss.

I believe most courses should incorporate Twitter into their curriculum. Before this class, I did not like Twitter more so because I didn't understand the concept of following complete strangers. Not only did I gain a network of people who commonly feel the same way I do on a personal level, but it also kept me intrigued to knowing current events and sociology. It gave me a reason to want to learn, incorporating something all people use (network) into a classroom. I was more interested in going home and spending time with my kids and social networking with friends and family than doing homework. This way I was able to do both and spread what I was learning with complete strangers in hopes that it causes a chain reaction. Not to mention the extra credit I'm going to get at the end towards my grade. It gave me an incentive to do the work, and also more knowledgeable with the material I was learning in class. IT MADE SENSE. I think what you are doing with Twitter is just the beginning of a great start to schools and classes everywhere. I see it being a new effective trend in the future.

Twitter has been a great learning tool. It helped me reflect what I learned in class in what I was researching. I found reading about sociology fascinating and by posting tweets towards stuff that interested me, it made me more engaged in class. Not only was I able to relate the topics in the books to actual live issues that were happening currently in the world, I was able to reflect it in my own personal life. I understand how most of the other molders of minds will be afraid to bring social media to their classroom, but nothing great came without risks and its doubters. I believe you are an innovator you took the past less traveled and went the extra mile in hope to reach your students.

I have truly enjoyed using Twitter in this class. It has been a great learning tool and I have learned a lot about what goes on outside my small world by using this form of social media. I am very glad that you as a professor have found a way to reach people beyond the normal books and lectures.

I think it's a very good idea, because it's something that you, the teacher, are already using outside of class time, and the students must contact you, and just make the effort on their end. Then you get to review it on your own time. It's also very convenient, as most of us are already using social networking sites daily anyway. It's a good way to stay in touch with the class, post extra material pertinent to sociology outside of the lecture, and earn extra credit in our spare time, when we have access to a computer, or even on our cell phones. One other important aspect of twitter is that it is instantaneous, and worldwide news is now shared automatically, and people have access to things that otherwise may be blocked or filtered through other forms of media. In all, I would say if the student takes the initiative, it's a good learning tool.

I believe that the Twitter media approach in the classroom is an invaluable one. We are in such an everyday global exchange that it becomes a means to growth and information beyond ourselves that is pertinent to our communication and understanding. You cannot reasonably be expected to solve a global issue without a global perspective.

I think that what you are doing is great getting the student to take an interst in social problems through media. I would advise mandating homework around subjects that are posted on Twitter. That would have students interacting on Socio101, like the forms online that Greenville Tech mandates for online classes.

I love it. The twitter socio 101 is a very different approach. It's interesting and keeps us students that love the internet interested. I also learn new things everyday. I think your teaching methods are awesome and I am going to miss your class.

I think this approach is a great tool for students to be able to interact with the material beyond the classroom. We are able to access this information from anywhere and all of the material is relevant and interesting. Being able to have such a great source as this one, students are able to expand their learning beyond ordinary measures. The multi-media approach is a great learning tool and helps to keep students engaged.
